Summer sun and warmer temperatures bring a lot more of us outdoors and headed to the pool or beach to cool off. But outdoor water activities can bring some extra risk of injury to the unwary. Here are some age old tips to keep in mind during weekends and vacations this summer.
- Be extra careful with young children around pools. Adult supervision is a must! Don’t rely on flotation devices.
- Don’t dive into shallow water.
- If you’re going in the ocean, go to a lifeguard protected beach and watch out for waves that could knock you down from behind when leaving the water.
- If surfing or paddle boarding, be sure to use a leash in case you fall off so the board doesn’t strike another person and you’re not left floundering in the deep water.
- If going jet skiing, stay clear of other boats and jet skies when possible.
- Avoid mixing alcohol or drugs and swimming. This tip is often not followed and sometimes leads to disastrous consequences.
- Apply a good sunscreen. It’s no fun staying in the hotel or beach house nursing a sunburn while your family and friends are out enjoying the beach or pool.
- Drink lots of water and stay hydrated.
- Wear a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection. They not only look cool but protect your eyes and sensitive skin areas around them from harmful sun rays. Read the “Mayo Clinic Minute” on why sunglasses are a must!
- Last but not least, play with rubber horse shoes on the beach . They hurt a lot less than the metal ones if they hit your feet. Plus they’re lighter to carry 🙂
- Remember to bring your lawyer an extra cinnamon bun or donut when biding him/her for that free initial consultation. 😉
